On August 20, 2016, the MTA with the help of the MHS NHS helped hand out water at the annual Run 4 Downtown (R4DT).
On August 17-19, 2016, MTA members attended the Summer Leadership Conference in Parsippany, NJ. There they attended several workshops centering around the importance of unions and building a stronger union to protect the rights of their members. The Middletown High School Scholastic Bowl team competed in Nationals earlier this month in Washington, D.C. The team made it to finals! The MTA was proud to sponsor their team sweatshirts!
On June 1, 2016, a NYSUT First Book representative, Paul Webster, came to our Rep Council Meeting. He brought with him a sampling of what's to come, including books, posters, pins, and pencils. This is only a taste of what it will be like on our Distribution Day some time next fall. Thanks to all the hard work of our First Book committee members, the MTA is eligible to receive 12,500 books to give to our Middletown community. Keep your ears open as the MTA prepares for our Distribution Day.

On Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Presidential Park Elementary, the Middletown National Honor Society hosted the Touch a Truck and Family Fun Day to benefit the Brittany Miller Foundation and Christian's Courage. The event also had a variety of different activities including face painting, musical performances, family games and crafts, and a hands-on chance to climb inside fire, police, construction vehicles. Presidential Park Elementary was buzzing with MTA members, students, parents, friends and family. It was a great day for all who attended.
Verizon employees have been on strike for the past few weeks. Verizon was built by the blood, sweat and tears of its workers, and yet despite the huge profits enjoyed by the company, Verizon seems bent on destroying the family life and job security of the very people who made their company what it is today.
MTA volunteers also participated in the Orange Regional Medical Center Run for Downtown(ORMC R4DT) on Saturday, August 15th. They were charged with maintaining the end-of-race water station in the heart of downtown Middletown. MTA volunteers included Tom Blon, Katy Crawford, Shadrac St. Louis, Kelly Quinn, Chris White, Kelly White, Denise Woolsey, Jenn Younghans. MTA President, Chris White, also reached out for help from MHS National Honor Society. Thirteen students volunteered to assist. They were Sheila Adjei-Mensah, Nicole Cioffe, Amy Gonzalez, Ashley Gonzalez, Jillian Kelly, Andre Marin, Leandra McDonald, Rose Alicea Oliveras, Mariela Pichardo, Kyla Savino, Catherina Vargas, Sarina Wallace, and Jennifer Zepeda. All volunteers received a complimentary R4DT t-shirt and free entry to the Taste of the Town, which included samples of food and drink from local restaurants, breweries, and wineries.
